Here and There Around the Church
Around the Church
We thank the Tuesday morning Bible study group (Dallas Jelsma, facilitator) for decorating the Christmas tree in the hall; Kehau Lai-Sloan for creating the beautiful lighted wreath over the doorway; and Dick and Debbie Koval for stringing lights on the outdoor cross.
Whatever happened to the "Church Without Walls Sunday"?
The weather is what happened, or at least a week-long warning of heavy
rains and floods. When Pastor Bob met with the staff of Kea'au Middle
School, they thought it the better part of wisdom to cancel the
work-day at the school. We hope to do it during spring break in March,
and to make it an even better event. Thank you for your willingness to
participate!
At the recent Fall Annual Meeting
we approved elected all those nominated to offices and boards. We're
thankful that our officers are continuing for another term, with their
experience (Noel Nakasone, Moderator; John Hu, Vice Moderator; Bev
Trifonovitch, Secretary; Dani Oertel, Trasurer). We also approved a
budget for 2009 of $266,970, a 1.4% increase over 2008. The meeting
also approved 10 priority projects recommended by the Church Council,
using some of the funds provided by the recent gift from Edward
Sasaki's estate. Copies of the agenda and the items voted on are
available from the table in the back of the hall.
After the first nine months of 2008 our church income was $229,758 (excluding the $75,000 Sasaki estate gift); our expenditures to that same date were $200,610. Giving in 2008 to the New Building Fund
as of November 28 was $50,742. Copies of the Treasurer's reports are
posted on the bulletin board in the church hall or available from the
church office each month for anyone who would like a copy.
Preliminary electrical plans for the new building
have been drawn up, and are being reviewed for possible revisions; a
plan for the plumbing is also being done. We thank the committee--Greg
Trifonovitch, Arnold Gregory, Ray Keuning and Terry Nago--for their
continued good work
A group of representatives from several community agencies in Puna, including our church, is organizing a "Kurtistown Ohana Family Fun Day"
at Kurtistown park on January 10. The goal is to make the park more
visible in the community as a safe place and a good resource for family
recreation.
